Monday, 7th January, is a public holiday in Ghana: In a signed statement the Minister of Interior has informed the general public that Monday, 7th January, 2019, has been declared a public holiday, Constitution Day, and should be observed as such throughout the country. This means all government offices will be closed for the day. The countries embassies will also be closed for the day.
 
British police assisting in investigations into girls attacked in Ghana: A group of UK schoolgirls who were sexually assaulted at gunpoint in Ghana are receiving support, police say. They were attacked on a visit to the west African country last Friday and returned to the UK on Sunday. A British police force is assisting an investigation in Ghana. Police said they would do "everything possible" to ensure the offenders were brought to justice. The police statement said the group were held at gunpoint after a number of armed men entered their accommodation. A Ghanaian security guard was shot and the female victims were "subjected to serious sexual assaults". Some of their possessions were also stolen. The victims are now being given support from "specially trained police officers, their school and other agencies", police added. The statement continued: "We are aware that the public will wish to show their support for the victims in this case but it is vital that their anonymity is maintained. "This includes discussion of their names, ages, addresses, school or any other information which could lead to their identification." - BBC online
 
Ärkebiskopen bojkottar Akademien: Sveriges ärkebiskop Antje Jackelén kommer inte att delta i Svenska Akademiens traditionsenliga högtidssammankomst den 20 december. "Efter allt som varit och utifrån hur Akademien och några ledamöter har profilerat sig kan jag inte uttrycka min solidaritet genom att delta som tidigare år", skriver Jackelén till Kulturnyheterna. 2018 har varit ett tungt år för Akademien. Årets litteraturpris är inställt och det är fortfarande oklart om det blir ett pris 2019. Ett flertal ledamöter har hoppat av sina uppdrag.
 
Klart för ny tv-avgift efter nyår: Riksdagen har beslutat att ersätta nuvarande radio- och tv-avgift med en ny avgift, public service-avgiften. Det blir i realiteten en skatt som ska tas ut av alla över 18 år, som har en beskattningsbar inkomst. Avgiften blir 1 proc av den beskattningsbara inkomsten upp till ett tak. För 2019 blir avgiften maximalt drygt 1 300 kr per person/år. Personer med lägre inkomst får en reducerad avgift. Riksdagen ändrar i regeringens förslag om sändningstillståndens längd. Den föreslogs att vara tio år och därefter åtta. Nu blir den sex år i stället. Den nya tv-avgiften, som börjar gälla från den 1 januari, 2019 ska betalas med 1 procent av den beskattninsbara inkomsten med ett tak. * För 2019 kommer avgiften max vara 1 300 kronor per person och år. * Personer med lägre inkomst än 13 600 kronor i månaden kommer att betala en reducerad avgift. * Familjer med två vuxna med lön kommer att få betala max 2 600 per hushåll. I dag betalar varje hushåll med tv- och radiomottagare 2 400 kr per år. (SVT text)
 
Ghana - biometric passport forms available free online: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced a new procedure for passport acquisition in Ghana. According to the Ministry, the move is in recognition of difficulties associated with passport acquisition in the country. A free Portable Document Format (PDF) version of the paper-based (Manual) Passport Form has been introduced to applicants on the Ministry's Portal, Effective Thursday, November 1, 2018.
