Tribute to a dear brother - Joe Etbon

Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time. Then your time on earth will be filled with glory.

Today we say final good-bye to our beloved brother, uncle, friend , a husband to Ladi and father to her children.

But above all a prominent person who played a major role in the life of the African community in Sweden and the Ghanaian community in particular. This is a man who dedicated his life to projects and protects the image of the ordinary African in this country. He never shied away to defend the dignity of the black man.

His love for his countrymen was demonstrated through his camera lens. I wonder if there is somebody among us who has no picture taken by our dear brother Suberu.

Oh heart, if one should say to you that the soul perishes like the body, answer that the flower withers, but the seed remains.

Suberu sowed a seed of unity. Together we forged unity among our association and union and brought about peace which once seems to elude us. I had a personal relationship with him; indeed I called him my senior brother. I missed his calls which were so regular and the love behind the greeting which is still echoing in my ears “that's alright Etbon, how are the girls, great.”

And this is where I turn to all of us today and plead that this seed should be watered and not allowed to wither. To me his death is a sacrifice to the African community and the Ghanaian community in particular that we should bury all our pettiness, squabbles, etc and unite us one people.

I know my brother would be happy if we can re-organize Ghana Union and make it the vibrant union it once was. It does not matter which association or union you belong to, Ghana Union is for all Ghanaians and we owe it to ourselves and to our departed President to make it stronger.

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination. If we are determined we can do it. And we need all hands on board. In fact we have no choice.

Life is eternal, and love is immortal, and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.

Africans let us love each other, let us be there for each other and stop all vices we practice against each other, because “Ubuntu, I am because we are”.

Suberu my dear brother the light you lit would not be allowed to quench, it shall forever glow in your memory.
Rest in peace, until we meet again.
